All I Want for Christmas . . .. . . is a ton of pea shingle. Told this to husband who thought me almighty odd, but when I explained he humoured me and pretended to 'get it'. He then said it'll cost about £80/ton - does anyone know where I can get it much, much MUCH cheaper???!!!

Wickes.
Travis Perkins.
Jewsons.
£40 a ton - ish and you would have to pay for delivery if you can't collect.

I got drainage pea gravel - 10mm - nice and smooth - great stuff - for £14 a tonne from a local quarry - boughthalf a load that was ocming to the farm - 10 tons does not go far at all.
The decorative pea gravel is the expensive stuff - pretty colours but the horses don;t care!

Ring up your nearest quarry - Hanson are nationwide. The nearer you are the cheaper it is, from about £15/tonne if you are fairly local. You want 5-10mm, as Bruce said.

i have been getting something called 'pipe bedding' from my local quarry, its 15 a ton and has been excellent.. and i noticed today that all the gravel i have been unloading after work has given me noticeable biceps.. scary! so not only is it cheaper but it saves on gym membership...

Pipe bedding will amount to the same thing. I presume you're better off with gravel rather than crushed rock though, crushed rock won't be as free flowing as the particles are more angular.
A tonne won't actually go very far, and for a quantity as small as that you are definitely better off going to a builder's merchant who will normally sell it in bulk bags.
