I have a cheap and cheeful 8.3 Megapixel Fuji thing I got marked down in Tesco becuase it was end of line. it can do short movies too.
I wouldn't buy anything expensive because sure enough someone will chew it, stand on it, drop it, knock it off a wall....and you need to be able to operate it one handed to hold a hoof up and use camera. One with a wrist strap is useful too.
I have lots of pictures of bits of my fingers!

I can see the point about not having to squat down in order to get the shots, but don't personally know of anything that would do the job. Probably needs a visit to a specialist shop and then that sounds too expensive for anything that is going too close to a horse's feet.
I take all my pictures on my Samsung 8mg camera phone (best definition of the camera phones out there). Then bluetooth to the PC so easy as pie even for a technophobe like me. And it has excellent video too. Only down side is it is not desperately keen on liver chestnuts in bright sunlight. But maybe that colour is hard to get right in strong sun anyway?
There is a risk that if it gets stepped on during photo shoot I won't be able to phone for back up

Have to hold the foot up to take the picture - putting the camera on the ground and placing the hoof on top of it does not work. Not like printing your bum on the photocopier

You have obviously never witnessed
a) the size of my bum
b) my complete cack handedness with the most simple of tasks

That is one hell of a price for something that will get wrecked. You can buy perfectly adequate, for hoof pictures, digital camersas for less than £100.
Not sure why you would need 24x optical zoom for this job unless you want to take hoof pics from across the field. Also I know that 12 mp is sexy but 5 MP should be perfectly adequate, unless you want to print posters.
Check Dixons, PC world or Jessops. They usually have lots of cheap digital cameras.
Would this be a good subject for the 2010 meeting - what sort of digital camera do you need for hoof pics? Any volunteers for doing a presentation on it?

I know its completely wasted on me - but I really want an articulated LCD for side views
....I do like my gadgets so its very tempting but I also know it would also be very silly to go for this

Surely everyone here has posters of their favourite hooves on their bedroom walls?
