Everyone OK in all this rain? You've got to feel so sorry for the poor folks in Cunbria and the borders who have been getting so much rain - a month's rain in 12 hours I heard.
We're getting more rain tonight up here in the Aberdeen area - but we've had a couple of drier days - shame really the ground was just starting to firm up again.
Not sure if I saw some flare on pony or if he is just starting to get webbed feet!
Hope everyone is OK.
Thought it would be good to have a thread to just moan about it, and share any flood stories!

I missed out on hunting but I have never enjoyed watching 22 men kick a bit of plastic around a pitch more in my life (and the game leaves me cold!!).

Guess I must have been lucky today.
Went down to Winchester to Trim a friends horse - missed the rain, it was almost sunny.
Got back just as the heavens opened so lit the fire and crashed out in front of it after lunch, and listened to the rain in between falling asleep.
But I do feel sorry for the people in Cumbria and Dumfries and Galloway. Travel must be difficult too with all the bridges that are out.

It's not been too bad where i live. It was dry most of the day yesterday and today it is sunny . I do feel for those that are flooded out though.
Another forum i go on one of them have been evacuated from there home last night. They have had to move all the livestoch and horses to higher ground. Luckily a neighbour of theirs is alot higher and all the animals have gone there.
I hope that all the water subsides soon for them and all the damage can start to be repaired.

started out wet but hope to get out on fatty later. sun out now.
Hope everyone is OK.
At ours, the field shelter area is fine as hardcore and pea gravel and they have bottom paddock of fescy grass but river of mud has developed in between Should have got more stone delivered but missed the boat now as quarry lorries cant get through when field so wet. Getting whole tree mulch soon hopefully.
Only silver lining is that this remains grass free in spring and early summer and when covered in bark provides excellent grass free day-pen.

We are fortunate and nearly at the top of a very tall hill, so flooding isn't a worry but we are very wet (nothing like Cumbria, but very. very soggy!).
Riding out in full waterproofs is just such an attractive look, isn't it Andy and I were out yesterday and could only hear what each other were saying if we shouted it down wind, and the gales were so bad the rain was actually painful As he said, before we lived on Exmoor we would never have dreamt of taking horses out in that sort of weather

Three of us went out for a nice long hack this morning, out for 20 minutes and wet through to our underpants so came home. Had to put rugs on wet horses poor things, tack sodden, swimming pool suddenly appeared in road going up to the field.
Home now with a lovely hot coffee and the Sunday papers.

We are very wet and muddy and windy here in Devon ! Pones are ok, their wooly coats are at least keeping their skin dry and awful muddy legs still reveal warm fluuf next to thr skin !! Trimmed Portia last weekend and her feet are doing really well still. We havent ventured around the fields for exercise this weekend as I could imagine grass skiing with all the wind - they are VERY bouncy !!

Was weird day here - strong sun, heavy clouds, rain and a biting damn cold wind.
Spent the day clearing blocked drains and repairing fencing in the new yard and was setting up electric fencing when Ben thought it would be quite funny to connect up the battery to the fencer - little b****r!
There's always plenty of mud.

Was it Dr Johnson who said "A man needs a good stout stick for his dog, his horse and his wife"
Ben was only getting me back. I told him the lecky fence was off yesterday when he climbed over it....it was a real genuine mistake.
But Ben never gets mad - he just gets even He's going to be an awesome teenager - God help me!

The effects of this flooding are only just starting to be realised aren't they, those poor people are so helpless, their lives and personal belongings changed beyond recognition.
We live almost at the top of the hill, but the actual top is my horses' field plus a line of woods above, with huge flat fields behind. We were flooded May 2008 - not as dramatic as it sounds, ie the water came down from the hill behind so quickly it backed up around our cottage and up through the floor and front door! So, no effluent, not rushing torrent, actually very little water in the house, only stuck outside the house for 30 minutes, but took months to repair. People in the village couldn't believe it. As soon as it rains a little bit we're on flood alert! Mind you, if you live in a village called Don head what can you expect?
On the other hand I've spent a wet weekend due to welling up every few minutes watching the emotional Parelli Celebration at the NEC (fabulous new arena with NO queuing for loos!!!!!). I'm such a wet sap, either welling up because it was so beautiful or welling up because of the horror stories or welling up because of horses' and people's achievements. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Can't say the same for my OH who was left to look after everyone in the mud and wet, he has an artificial leg so struggles more than the rest of us. Bless Was funny hearing the horses squelch towards me in the dark long before I could see them 9.00pm last night! Related to hippos aren't they?

Wild and grim here today - its actually darker now than it was at first light...
Horses were forced out to exercise in driving rain and hail yesterday, and were very unimpressed...Would whoever is rain-dancing please stop?

Not me - have not washed my car for a few weeks
Took Brego out yesterday between showers - he was not impressed, but he was certain the wind was out to get him, along with the horse eating robin, the carniverous leaves that were blowing about and the terrifying twigs.

I've pulled all of the mats out of my car today and have all the windows open to let it dry properly and air. Take advantage of a sunny dry day while we can. I must have gone through sufficient deep puddles and overflowing streams to allow a little water in and the carpets were starting to smell musty. I thought my fog lights looked a bit funny - they were both full of water!
I've never been to a Parelli Celebration Stormybracken - but we've been deeply into Parelli for about 5 years now and it has made a tremendous difference to our guys. Lots of folks knock the Parelli stuff because, lets face it, it;s heavilly commercialised. But it does provide a set of tools and a framework for understanding problems and finding solutions. Completely changed the way I ride and think abotu the experience for the horse.

Lucky here in my valley in Wiltshire, been VERY windy & rainy but all ok. My very odd boys pointed out to me tonight that they'd rather stay in the field (nice big hedges for shelter) so i left them to it! (means i can have a lie in tomorrow morning on my day off, HURRAH!)

So good so far - I'm itching to put a rug on Storm, it's very difficult to break an old habit, but he really doesn't need it yet. Amazing.
Although very wet and windy, it isn't particularly cold yet.

Raining again here in Lancashire - I reckon we've only had about three dry days in the last month. Blue sky is a rarity, though I think I saw a patch of it for about half an hour yesterday, before it started raining again. After such a wet summer and now a soaking autumn the fields are just mud and horses and humans are miserable. But at least we're not as badly hit as our neighbours to the north - Cumbria is a disaster area with more torrential rain forecast for later on. Surely the rain has to stop soon? I've never known it so consistently wet - and this is from a born and bred Lancastrian.

You sure you were not hallucinating?
What we need is some glasses that make grey skies look blue.

Never mind the rain, what about the wind? Just have to go and find my wheelbarrows and feed buckets... and horses! Cr***y electric fencing and blown down as well because the ground is so wet the stakes can't stay upright. Will have a foray into the woods later, see what devastation is in there. Might be a good incentive to start road work this week

I was sitting in the lounge last night and could see the patio door flexing in the wind
Something wrong though this morning!!
I went out to rescue the dustbin lids and empty the water out of the dustbins etc, as the lids had gone walkabouts. The trees are moving gently in a light breeze, the sky is blue and there is a big bright light up there in it, wonder what that could be??
Hope everyone else got a bit of blue sky and sun - it makes everything seem much more cheerful

Got some of your glasses Chris, made Storm walk consistantly heel-toe on grassy, muddy, and gravelly surfaces We're in Week 7 of rehab. and seem to have recovered from his little escapade under the fence.
Those same glasses are also making the pony look as though he'll be dry enough to ride in another hour or so!
Must do some work...

Blowing a right hoolie up here - and freezing cold with it - down about 4C this morning - but feeling bitter in the wind
All the boys going a bit mad - so let the into the largest field for a good blast around to get it out of their systems. Funny - Bramble kicks off and fairly flies - the other two don't have a ghoster of catching him. Like a wee rocket!

Bored with it now! Went for a 30minute hack this morning, it tipped down the entire time & I nearly got blown off the horse at the top of the hill - where I was reliably informed by a local farmer that "the Welsh weather starts at the top of that hill"! No offense to Welshys but I think I will ride the other way next time!
Got back & the sun came out (for five minutes). My fields are on a bank & haven't been able to get into one of them for a while, so am using the 200m stony drive as turnout, seems to be working well! As I type it is just falling out of the sky. Poor Cumbrians.
Right, sad trog that I am I am off to check if my drains that I cleared out 2 days ago are working - I need to get a life...
Take care all.

Don't mention drains - it's bad luck
When we moved to he new yard the lady who owns the place came up wiht a brand new set of drain rods (good ones too) with all the attachments and said "you're going to need these in the next few days" and yes, we did.
There's a satisfaction in that nice grugling sound they make when you finally get it clear!

Bruce, this made me laugh, I really enjoy clearing drains - though I hate to admit it, my partner reckons I should go for a job as a gully cleaner. Yes it is satisfying & mine are working hope yours continue to. I spent an entire day once at a livery yard I was on clearing their drains for them when the next week the owner blocked them all up again - needless to say I didn't bother again!
Mine are working here, they are creating quite a torrent down the 15ft bank, I might dress it up & try & make it look like a waterfall??!
