linseed makes coats fade ???

Ok I heard this on another forum - linseed apparently makes coat fade.  I noticed Jakes coat is more orange in summer, red in winter. He looks a bit faded mid summer but I thought this was the sun as that's why they rug show ponies especially chestnuts.

Anyone notice anything like this when feeding linseed

Both mine are dark bays and usually bleach orange mostly in the saddle area. It happened before linseed became part of their diet and it didn't get any worse when it did. Not heard that one before.

I've only ever noticed it improve coats too.  Confused
Since being on it, almost everyone comments how good my horse looks and how shiny he is!
I would say that his colour looks deeper and richer since he's been on the linseed ...   Smile

Coat fading is usually down to copper deficiency. Copper is needed to build the enzyme that creates melanin.

and linseed is a source of copper

Funny. Every summer Link has gone from his usual almost liver chestnut colour to a real bright ginger mut and then dark again for the winter.

But since starting the barefoot diet, he has stayed his normal dark copper colour and has had darker dapples instead.

When piebald Bramble started on the barefoot diet - with linseed, magox and brewers yeast - he threw out a lot of auburn hair quite quickly and has now thrown a lot of grey hair!

But all of them have silky lustrous - and far more waterproof coats!

Works for us!

I've heard this mentioned a few times, but feeding linseed and hoof mender (which is high in copper) made no difference. We're talking bleaching of areas that get sweaty and then wet and dry in the sun here, not genral coat fading, is that the same thing?

Not sure.

Just feeding the minimum recommended amount of copper doesn't necessarily ensure that there is enough copper to go around in the body, as other minerals (iron, manganese) can block the absorption of copper. If there's an excess or iron in the diet, for example, you'd have to feed proportionally more copper to ensure it is available for use in the body.

BTW, I didn't know that linseed is supposedly high in copper. Does anyone have an analysis? Charnwood lists all kinds of stuff on theirs, but not copper.

Simple systems pure linseed says it has 17mg/kg naturally occuring copper in it.

My 2 have been on linseed for ages.  Little black pony looks as dark as a furry piece of black coal and chestnut mare looks like she has been tango'd.  She has lovely dapples in the summer and I think this is due to the amount of nettles she eats !

I have just put a pic of Little Man aka Saracen on my blog as it was looking a bit unloved, taken early in the year when we had snow, up to his knees.  Also one of them both having a 'burn' aroung the field, although it is not very clear.  Take a look ...
