Magic UpdateWell........ one bottle of colloidal silver, many many homeopathic pills, one course of pain killers, two vet visits and one set of x-rays later and I still have a VERY lame pony.
The vet rang today with the x-ray results and said that there was nothing to see other than a perfect foot, no rotation, no trimming required and plenty sole thickness. Just a shame she can't put weight on the "perfect foot"
This also happened last year in the other hind foot and the abscess took months to finally appear, and when it did there was such a tiny amount of pus it was hard to believe all that pain came from that. I had x-rays done then too and there was nothing to see.
The vet said that really, her excellent foot condition is working against her as her little feet are rock hard and tight with no easy way for any infection to get out. I am putting her back on Danilon as the ground is uneven and rutted and frozed solid and she finds it really hard to cope with, even sound-as-a-pound Erin is picking up her skirts and tip-toeing over the worst bits!
So....... any other pearls of wisdom anyone can offer?

Could you pad and boot and see if you can get her to weight bear because it may get the abcess to blow quicker?
Also, when we had a slow abcess one very wet year (aren't they all!!), I brought said pone in and let the foot dry out and it blew straight away.

Hi Justine,
The painkillers actually help her movement, but if I could find a little enough boot I would try that, anyone know of a tiny Shetland sized boot?
At the moment her foot is permanently dry (apart fom the tubbing!) as the ground is still frozen solid We live in a little Glen which sounds cute but it's a frost pocket so my ground doesn't thaw until about a month after the surrounding land! During the summer it's way too hot down here so we can't win
I am still tubbing everyday too, in fact the vet had a h*ll of a job getting Magic to put her foot on the wooden block for the x-ray because you only have to walk towards her and she lifts her foot - she's so used to having it poked prodded and boiled!!!

Here is a stupid question !
I keep seeing people with abscess problems... I'm dreading and praying because so far it has never happen to my horse.
What causes it and what can one do to prevent it ?

Hi Tally!
In my particular case, Magic is a grass sickness survivor which has left her with a real sensitivity, she can get a bout of laminitis by just looking over the fence at the spring grass.
Her 2 abscesses have nothing to do with going BF as she was never ever shod and they are the direct result of her being laminitic. For what it's worth, Erin has never had an abscess since going BF over 2 years ago.............ohhhh, I really wish I hadn't even thought that!!! I'm off to throw salt over my shoulder of find a black cat
