Price of Rasps - eeekI've just been onto tinterweb to look at how much rasps are now.... the ones I use have gone up £30 since I last bought any! Ouch.
So, where does everyone get their rasps? I'm going to have to see if I can get them cheaper somewhere else, although I usually collect mine from Atlantic Equine so would have to figure in postage costs otherwise...
Thanking yous

I get mine from http://www.equinepodiatrysupplies.co.uk/trimming%20toolsGC.html and pay about £19.75 including postage. They also do boxes of 10 which are cheaper.
I did try ordering a more expensive rasp on the basis it would be better and they phoned me and advised not to bother and that Mercury brand was better and cheaper. Have to say it does the job for me. But I am sure professional trimmers would recommend something different.

I actually cadge mine off the farrier - get them for £15 a go. Don;t go through enought to justify buying a box.
Bought one of Anni last time for £25 but it was a ValleOrb and I must say I liked it far better than the Mustad/Savedge rasps I've used before - not so "fierce"
Previously I bought from Swans and they were quite reasonable.

I buy mine from the place my ex-farrier used to buy his, a farriery supplies shop ten miles from here. I've got SaveEdge at the moment £16, but I love a real beast of a rasp and I find that Karcher are better for a little Shetland's rocks of feet.

I get used to get mine locally, but will probably have to go back to mail order from Stromsholm, as the local chap is no longer in business.
They were running at about £15 per rasp, but I order them in multiples. The quality of lots of brands has gone downhill in the last 2 or 3 years - SaveEdge used to be quite good, as did Heller Legend, but they aren't like they used to be (sucks teeth and shakes head sorrowfully)....

I learned pretty quick in a livery yard that you keep one rasp for using on feet, and an old rusty one for when you have to rasp clenches off! Keep 2 handles too so the temptation to just use the good one doesn't get the better of you.
Being in a livery yard, with lots of visiting horses too, I take off a surprising number of shoes in a month! All shapes and sizes, even Clydesdales!
They keep getting twisted, half pulled off, horribly overgrown because the farrier hasn't been paid and won't touch the horse.....either that or my mate is running late (as usual) and gets me to help him out by pulling shoes which is great fun and a good opportunity to learn useful stuff - irresistable for a hoof anorak.
That's something I'll really miss when I move off the yard. They will miss me too...they just haven't cottoned on to that yet!

Thanks folks.
Hmm, might have to bite the bullet then. I gave up on save edge too. The last few boxes lasted not very many trims.
Have been using vallorbe ones and have to say they are brilliant and have lasted me forever, but last time a box of 5 worked out at £16 each, and this time they'll be £24 each!!
That's some hike in price!

Looked at what I have and that is Mercury, I have no idea if good or not.

Must say I was a bit shocked that our local tack shop was selling rasps at £38 that were basically ...well cr*p
Narrow blades and no tangs.

I got mine online form www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk at a good price and they gave excellent service. Not sure of the make though.
They also do a wide range of hoof boots too!!

I've been using Save Edge and Silver Bullet. I bought the Silver Bullet somewhere to see if it was any good and it has outlasted 3 Save Edges, although it is getting a bit worn now.
Must try and find some more of them.
