Yea-sacc and brewers yeast

Yea-sacc is apparently a "live yeast" though what that means when all yeasts come alive when you given them sugar and water, I don't know. Recommended dose is 10g a day irrespective of size of horse, which I find very odd.

Brewer's yeast, for my size fellows, is fed at 50g a day.

Now here's the thing. I have just swapped from Yea-sacc to BY and Jazz, who will not clean his bowl normally, is licking it spotless now it has BY in it.

Since swapping, I also feel that he is coping better with the sudden flush of autumn grass than I expected. I'm pretty sure that some of this is volume related, ie that 50g of a product must surely "eat" more sugar than 10g of a similar product?

The difference in palatability, however, was a total surprise. On the down side, I hate the smell and it's such a fine powder it's darned difficult to measure! Laughing

The brewers yeast that's sold as a supplement has been killed so it is no longer viable.  Yea-Sacc is a viable Saccharomyces Cerevisiae strain so it is active.  So the Yea-sacc idea is that it metabolises in the horses gut secreting molecules that aid hind gut stability and microflora balance.  I would think that the brewers yeast is 'just' acting as a nutrient source.

Edited to add : Patch loves stuff with brewers yeast in it (and to change hores to horses  Laughing  Laughing  Laughing )

BY makes me sneeze terribly when I've been handling it, and my eyes go red and itchy!

There is also the fact that as you feed brewers yeast in greater amounts than Yeasacc/probiotics (10-20g as opposed to 50-150g), you are massively increasing the amount of B vitamins and chromium available, which is likely to help as well.

Aaaaah. So the BY is dead then? NO alcohol production, so that rules out one reason why I thought they might be keen to get their nashers on it. It makes me sneeze too Bruce but you sound allergic to it Confused

There is some research which was done with human diabetics, they found that a large tablespoon of brewers yeast per day helped the uptake of glucose.  This is possibly the chromium which cannot be supplemented due to EU law in the UK.  Brewers yeast is a trace source of chromium which has been shown to help the uptake of magnesium.

Tis all interesting stuff.

I think he's even better since he went on it. How interesting!
